I Like To Talk Lighting | For Photographers

It’s no secret that I love anything to do with lighting, and if you start talking with me about lighting I’ll gladly keep going until your ears bleed. The coordinators of the 2010 Digital Photo Expo figured that out and as such have asked me to join their panel of speakers for the two day event being held in Calgary over the October 2nd and 3rd weekend to talk location lighting for creative portaiture. It’ll cost you a whopping $20 to come see me flap my gums at the convention, but the sweeter part is that the $20 ticket stub can be redeemed against a select product from The Camera Store, so you can’t lose. Click here to be taken to the Digital Photo Expo website, and if you’re in Calgary that weekend come watch my face turn red in front of a bunch of other photographers.

Nathan Elson - 95% of the time I use actual studio strobes as that allows me both more power, and the ability to use large modifiers (softboxes, octaboxes, etc) that you wouldn’t be able to mount to a speedlight. I power them with the Vagabond II battery pack from alienbees, which isn’t light (18lbs) but I’ve yet to actually kill it on a shoot.

Cheers

Jessica Stephen - Hey Nathan, i’ve been following your blog for awhile, my hometown is also Estevan, but i am currently taking the professional photography course on Vancouver Island and permanently living in Red Deer, your lighting is amazing and i was wondering what gear you take with you on shoots? Do you use speedlights with umbrellas? or do you have actual studio lights you take out? love your work!!!!! keep it up!!
